Foundry & Smelter PPE: Aluminized and FR Clothing

Foundries and smelters run the most severe thermal environments in South African industry. Workers on furnace floors, casting lines and ladle routes face three hazards at once: radiant heat that builds relentlessly near a furnace mouth, molten metal splash from pouring, tapping and slag handling, and contact heat from tools, moulds and freshly cast work. Ordinary workwear, and even standard flame-retardant clothing, is not designed for this combination. Foundry PPE has to reflect radiant heat away before it reaches the wearer, and it has to shed molten metal rather than letting it burn through.

The right garment for molten metal work

Indi-Safe's AluTech range is engineered for exactly these conditions and is tested to ISO 11612:2015 with ratings of A1 B1 C4 D3 E3 F1. The two ratings foundry buyers should look at first are D3 and E3, the highest levels for molten aluminium splash and molten iron splash. The aluminized para-aramid outer reflects radiant heat, the base fabric resists flame without melting, and an optional FR cotton D59 thermal liner adds insulation for extended work close to the heat source. Seams are sewn with Kevlar thread so the garment does not fail at its joins.

The AluTech Foundry Bib & Brace protects the legs and torso under a jacket or coat. For task-specific protection, the AluTech Furnace Apron covers frontal exposure at the furnace mouth, the AluTech Double Palm Furnace Glove handles ladle and casting work, and the AluTech Furnace Hood & Visor and AluTech Furnace Hood Shield protect the head and face in high radiant heat zones.

For maintenance, fettling and grinding areas away from molten metal, the WoolTech FR wool range, tested to ISO 6940, gives spark and spatter protection with all-shift comfort.

Compliance context

Under the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993, employers must first take reasonably practicable steps to eliminate or mitigate hazards, and where hazards remain, General Safety Regulation 2 requires the employer to provide suitable protective equipment free of charge, to train employees in its use and limitations, and to enforce its use. For a foundry, "suitable" means garments actually rated for molten metal splash, which is what the ISO 11612 D and E codes certify. Specifying a D3/E3-rated aluminized garment for molten metal work gives your SHEQ file a defensible, documented basis for the selection.
